Home for the O'Briens, for many years, was situated near the edge of the cliff along the shore of Lake Erie. The Lake's south shore is a wonderful place to be in Spring and Summer, though difficult to reconcile in Winter. Over the years they lived there, Jack often walked to the hill above the beach, looked out over the water, toward Canada, and imagined all the adventures that had taken place on that great stage. The one in the pages of The Last U-Boat never did. But it could have.

As Hitler’s Wermacht crushes Europe, Nazi saboteurs prepare to strike at America’s heartland from beneath the waters of the Great Lakes.
Their weapon – a U-boat – has been smuggled piece-by-piece and reassembled in a secret underground factory. But a freak accident forces the infiltrators to abandon the sub just before its launch.
Eight decades later, 16-year-old Charlie LeClair discovers the Last U-boat—deep beneath his backyard on the shores of Lake Erie.
Can Charlie and his friends bring the sub to life? Can they solve the mystery of how the Nazis planned to launch it from far above the lake’s waters? Can he do it without getting caught?
The answer depends on whether his parents, his friends, a budding romance, the US Navy, an army of terrorists, or a pair of criminal thugs can stop him.

The Roundabout Way is Jack's first book, and it offers a unique view of living life in The Villages–Florida's fastest-growing community. It's a collection of 28 compelling fictional short stories about the many facets of aging in a 55+ world, and how Seniors cope. The true-to-life stories boldly confront subjects like declining health, dealing with technology, losing a spouse, finding romance, taking risks, loving pets, making friends, causing trouble, and settling scores—all with a healthy combination of laugh-out-loud humor, heart-wrenching pathos and charm.
You'll meet a colorful cast of characters, who may very well remind you of folks you already know—or people you'd love to have in your own neighborhood. Just as in real life, you'll find there's nothing stereotypical about these Seniors.

U-22 is buried, well-preserved, near the Lake Erie shoreline, where it remained undetected for over eight decades. In fact, U-22 was reportedly lost in the North Sea, though its remains have never been located. U-19, U-20, and U-23 were cut into sections and rebuilt to patrol the Black Sea. In our story, U-22 was rebuilt to attack the American heartland.
Charlie lives in the house where the Nazi saboteurs once lived who supervised the reconstruction of U-22.
Amber is a neighbor and, in Charlie's opinion, the best-looking girl at McCullough High.
Danny Doubeck is Charlie's closest friend and also a neighbor. Doubeck lives right across the creek from Charlie.
Michelle "Mish" Murphy is an artistic and creative young woman who uses her imagination and intellect to solve problems.
Marty Silver is an honest-to-goodness genius. He speaks several languages and wins every science fair competition he enters.
Stewart Swanson has issues. He's not a very friendly guy at first. But life brings him around.
Raymond Colt, retired Marine Gunnery Sergeant, owns a military surplus store. Colt's got a lot of connections.
Oleg Petrosian has just become proprietor of Raccoon Bay Marina. Oleg doesn't seem to know much about running a marina.
Frik Nazarian is Oleg's cousin. He's not as fun-loving at Oleg.

Jack lived for years on the shores of Lake Erie and was always aware of the many historic events associated with the lake. The openness of the border and the absence of defenses during WWII would have made America's heartland an enticing target for Nazi saboteurs. As the idea for the story developed, it became clear that all of the elements needed to make O'Brien's fictional story happen in reality were more than plausible.
For example, the Nazis had learned how to slice U-boats into pieces, transport them over land and reassemble them in secret. One of the U-boats, in the group of those that were cut apart and moved, has never been found. There was a subversive attack, called Operation Pastorius, organized by Hitler's Abwer, that attacked the US with saboteurs deposited along the US coast via U-boat.
The Last U-Boat is about several high-school friends in their late teens, but the story was developed in a workshop of adults who found it exciting and fun. It has been compared to The Goonies
The book is approximately 400 pages
Jack began the project in March of 2022, about two years before publication.
Much of the research for The Last U-Boat was conducted through Google searches. Additionally, Jack had the pleasure of watching a number of films and reading several books about U-Boats.
Some scientific statements are made during the telling of the story that touch upon physics, electricity and electronics, natural science, mechanical engineering, sailing, navigation, military terms and protocols, and more. Several experts in those fields helped review and improve factual content so that it accurately reflected reality and made the story more believable.
The Last U-Boat is self-published on Amazon/KDP.
